Sports cars present a special challenge for car insurance companies. They’re light (Yes, if you buy a Lotus you know this ;)), fast and involved in collisions more often than “regular” cars. Insuring a Lotus doesn’t have to be difficult or excessively expensive, though, if you take the proper steps and ask the right questions.

Before you decide on which insurance carrier to choose, decide how often and how far you’d like to drive your Lotus. Will you just be taking it out on the weekends or do you intend to make it your everyday car?  Insurers will want to know how many miles you intend to put on the car.  You can save money by driving it less than five thousand miles per year.

You may get a discount just by asking for it.  If you have a good driving record many carriers will discount your premiums even on a sports car. Is there a Lotus club or even a sportscar organization that you can join?  Such clubs often have more affordable group rates at a significant savings than you could get insuring your car by yourself.

Get a free car insurance quote from several companies before deciding which you’ll give your business to. Be sure to check out their customer satisfaction rating and their rate of complaints, too.  But the most important thing in the end is to read all the fine print before signing so you’ll know exactly what is covered and what isn’t.  It would be very expensive and upsetting to damage your Lotus then find out that particular circumstance isn’t covered by your auto insurance!
